Import RSS Feed

To understand the best way to import an RSS feed, it may be good to take a brief look at just what Really Simple Syndication and RDF Site Summary (RSS) are all about. RSS is based on Extensible Markup Language (XML) and has the basic purpose of delivering updates to web-based content. In many ways, it really is that simple. With RSS, Webmasters can provide headlines and summarized content to end users, without those users having to check in with several individual sites or having to read numerous "update" emails. From the user point of view, consumers use RSS readers/aggregators to collect and monitor their favorite feeds in one location. Collected or summarized content viewed in the reader/aggregator is an RSS feed. The key to communication in any medium (television, the printed word or Web content) is having the information in a form that the end user can access easily. This is especially true with the increasing use of the Internet and Web sites as the primary method of sharing news, ideas and product information. That puts RSS at the heart of this method of communication. In recent years, a few enterprising individuals have established a standard that allows easier generation of RSS feeds, as well as better methods of converting those feeds to usable formats. The next important step is to import the RSS feed. Many of those same individuals have worked hard to improve the function of import programs, with key goals of eliminating a lot of copying and pasting. The actual time of importing is, for most services, still left to the user. Key developments in importing RSS feeds include updates that check for duplication. If one of your feeds has been updated recently and you need to import again, you should be able to do this without bringing in previous items a second time. For those who import RSS feeds before this update is made to their service, duplicate items must be deleted manually. Basically, this process is based on the Globally Unique Identifier (GUID), a unique 128-bit number to identify a particular component, application, file, database entry or user. Some of the features to look for in import alternatives: handles most or all versions of RSS; does not import the same information a second time when you update; handles time zone variations; handles XML specs and poorly formed XML. Another key piece of advice from some of the services connected with importing RSS feeds - If you are importing content, be certain that you have permission from the copyright owner. As you go through the process of importing RSS feeds, you may find that the process has become simple enough to build a custom feed in minutes. |
