In the past, going to each individual Web site has proved to be too time-consuming for most people and it became necessary to develop and generate RSS feeds. As an early solution, Web site managers and end users shared email notices, but even this can be confusing due to the number of messages necessary to stay current.

Enter here the RSS feed, a more organized collection of information tailored to the individual.

RSS (Really Simple Syndication and Rich Site Summary) is essentially a format for content distribution.

At its core, RSS is Extensible Markup Language (XML), a method of sharing information across different information systems. Simply put, Webmasters create an RSS file that contains limited information such as headlines, or brief descriptions that lead to more information.

Consumers, end users and customers use RSS readers (aggregators) to gather their favorite feeds in one central location and this content is known as the RSS feed.

Creating an RSS feed is now relatively simple. Many large news organizations offer the feature, as do an increasing number of individual sites and Weblogs.

In addition, an increasing number of services have been created to make access to sites easier. The end user simply chooses to participate by entering the link into an aggregator/reader or, in some cases, by simply choosing to click on an RSS icon.

As one reviewer has noted, the process is getting less complex every day. The reader/aggregator searches the feeds subscribed to and delivers updates based on customized choices.

Among the formats included under the "RSS" umbrella are RSS 2.0, RDF Site Summary (RSS 1.0 and RSS 0.90) and Rich Site Summary (RSS 0.91).

Other formats, similar in method to RSS, were tried but didn't become popular (some are still used today, though perhaps only with a limited number of serviced providers). As with RSS feed conversion, many of the sites offering to help generate RSS feeds are free, as long as you plan to use them for non-commercial activity. If you have a profit motive, you can always participate in a paid program.

RSS now makes it possible to stay current, accessing favorite Web sites in a way that is easier than checking those sites individually.
